The world’s greatest golfer and possibly one of the most talented athletes to play sports, has been caught in sordid affairs with over ten women and counting. These revelations came to light during thanksgiving when Tiger Woods crashed his car at 2.am outside his million dollar mansion. Within a few days after the crash, the media caught news of Tiger Woods alleged affairs. Ever since it has been constant news in the papers, news channels and the radio with everyone offering their own opinion of the incident. My question is very simple. Who in the world cares about Tiger Woods affairs? Honestly, is this story big enough for it to be headlines in the New York Times and other papers for over two weeks? America has people dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and a President that is trying to cripple the economy with his catastrophic health care plan, yet for some reason the Tiger woods story is more important.
I understand that Tiger Woods is an Idol to many people and he has many lucrative endorsement deals. Sure, people are going to be disappointed in him. But this is not news that should be any ones business and definitely not front page news. The American people have far more issues and current events to be concerned about than who Tiger Woods decides to bed. This is not only about Tiger Woods. It seems that America cares far too much about celebrities in general. Magazines such as People, National inquirer and US help promote a culture that is obsessed with fame and stardom. It seems almost every night TMZ and other news channels have stories about Lindsey Lohan and other detrimental celebrities. These types of stories are encouraging America to be obsessed with the wrong ideals and issues in the world. Just the other day I overheard a conversation in the grocery store about the recent allegations of Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen beating this wife. However, I couldn’t help but think how many people are beaten everyday by their husbands or boyfriends. How come these other incidents don’t make the top story on the ten o clock news? The answer to that is very simple, no one cares.
What I fail to understand is how celebrities are made out to be more important than the average American person. There is no difference between George Clooney and your average police officer, only one is saving lives the other acting in movies. They both are human; they are both biologically the same. Sure actors and celebrities normally make a fair amount of money and I can understand the fascination of wanting to have the millions they have. But keep in mind there are thousands of businessmen, bankers, accountants and real estate people making just as much money. The media doesn’t follow these men around. Most importantly there are far more important topics to be discussed than what Kim Kardashian wore to a party the night before. The only way for this constant fixation of celebrities to stop is for the media to stop promoting these types of people to the world. However, that would also take for the American people to stop buying these garbage magazines and watching the senseless television shows on celebrities. People need to be focused on more significant issues going on in the world. Caring about Tiger Woods Affairs and other celebrity nonsense is simply pointless and meaningless.
