Ten University of Miami High School Online students have dominated at tennis tournaments in the past month. From National Opens to ITFs, these talented UMOHS students have made it at least to quarters in every tournament.

In the USTA Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, three UMOHS students scored high in boys 16-and-under tournament. Nick Spinazze lost in the quarters, but not before taking out the third seed in a three-set match. Chris Price, a UMOHS student from Texas, took his skill to the semis placing third. Not to be outdone, Kayvon Karimi place second, losing to second seed Nathaniel Schnugg 6-2 6-3.

In the Girls 18-and-Under Nationals held at Tampa, Florida, top-seeded Kim Couts made it to the semifinals dropping only a set. Doubles was also played where UMOHS Christina Liles placed second in this age group with her partner Lorinda Boothman.

A few months after the nationals, an ITF/USTA event was played in Carson, California, at the Home Depot Center. Players arrived to check in while a professional soccer game was in progress in the dome next door. Because this tournament was ranked Level 1, players received accommodations until they lost.

Three UMOHS girls had good results. Kim Couts and Sanaz Marand, each with separate partners, reached the quarters in the 18-and-under girls’ doubles, while Andrea Remynse reached the semis in singles. Andrea, who had little to say about her matches, was very disappointed with the loss of Illinois to UNC in the NCAA Basketball Championships.

On the boys’ side, finals in the 16s doubles featured Tyler Hochwalt and Chris Price defeated Nick Spinazze. The Boys 18s had several good results. Doubles in 18-and-Under Boys featured a win by UMOHS junior Philip Bester and partner Holden Seguso. Peter Aarts reached the quarters. Jamie Hunt lost in the semifinals of singles and in the quarter finals of doubles. Jesse Levine made it to the semis in both singles and doubles.

Looking for rides to Palm Springs for the Easter Bowl was up next for these competitors. Some players hitched rides, while others resorted to busses and trains. Easter Bowl was starting the next day, and players were urged to look their best for the press-friendly tournament.

Players felt the pressure from the press and the need to get the extra points to make it into the slams over seas. Marcus Fugate scored big with a doubles win in 18-and-Over Boys Doubles with parner Dylan Arnould. Jesse Levine reached the semis, losing a close three- setter to second-seed Carsten Ball. Marand made it to the quarters in doubles. Tyler Hochwalt reached the quarters, losing his match after a 6-4 5-0 lead.

All of the University of Miami Online High school had outstanding results and were very excited to participate in such prestigious events. The Virtual Village staff sends its congratulations to everyone who had the chance to participate and wishes them good luck in their European tour and future events.
