Soccer is defined as a football game in which two teams of 11 players try to kick or “head” a ball into the opponent’s goal. Soccer is a sport in which the players must endure 80 minutes of constant running, and they must be able to continuously keep an eye on everyone and everything around them. A soccer team must have players that are talented and dedicated.
Starting Oct. 10, the Airline Boys Soccer Team will begin preparing to leave their mark at Airline. This year with over 50 boys trying out the AHS soccer team may be able to not only have two but three boys’ soccer teams. Though on Oct. 10 the teams will not be able to practice with soccer balls. They will instead start conditioning for the next two weks to help prepare for the upcoming season. Over the next two weeks the team will run several miles each practice to help prepare the future players to be divided into varsity or Jr. varsity. To be considered to play on the varsity team, the players must be able to run two miles in 14 minutes. Some of the soccer players joined the AHS cross country team to help them prepare for the upcoming soccer season.
“Joining the Cross Country team has definitely helped prepare me for the tryouts and the upcoming soccer season”, said Junior Cameron Mehl.
This year the Viking Soccer Team is preparing to leave its mark at Airline by winning its first ever state title. Though the acutal soccer practices will not begin until Oct. 31 there is a great deal of anticipation for the upcoming season. This year the Airline Soccer Team has three main goals: to win all tournaments entered, to win the disctrict title and finally to win Airline’s first ever soccer state title.
“This year’s upcoming team has more talent and more depth than I have seen for the past five years,” said Coach White, “The approaching soccer season should be the best Airline has had yet, and I encourage the student body to come and support us.”
