On November 7 th, a group of German students from the German Exchange program came to Linwood Middle School’s German class to visit. We welcomed them warmly, but I was amazed. I had always thought of German students as uniformed and prim, but these students, 15 and 16 years old, might as well come from our school. Their relaxed, cheerful manner convinced me that this was going to be fun.
They introduced themselves in perfect English. Then, we read a story, answered some questions, and asked them some questions in German. They also taught us the song “My Hat Has Three Corners” in German, where we take out a word every time we sing the song, and we taught them the hokey-pokey.
At the end of class, we said our goodbyes and left, but even though we are from different countries, our similarities in our capacities for learning the languages have made us united.
