Halloween’s History
By Matt Maciol Nick Castillo Jaed Noleal
Are you wondering how Halloween started? This Holiday was started about two thousand years ago by the Celts in Ireland on October 31, and was called Samhain. The Celtics believed that on this day the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. The Celts celebrated by making sacred bonfires and dressing in costumes. During this day costumes and masks were worn at festivals to calm evil spirits. This holiday never died even though the Celtics were conquered, and it was passed on. Halloween spread to America because of immigrants who brought their Halloween customs with them. An Irish man named “Stingy Jack” The story says that stingy Jack invited the devil to come have a drink with him. He then convinced the devil to turn into a coin so he can buy the drinks. Jack put the coin into his pocket next to a cross which prevented the devil to turning back into his original form. He told the devil he will let him turn into his original form if he promised to leave Jack alone for a year. A year later the devil returned and Jack tricked the devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. Quickly Jack carved a cross at the bark of the tree. Now that’s how Halloween started.

Is Halloween’s meaning changing... or just the costumes? Halloween used to be a fun time for kids and parents to dress up as funny looking monsters or princesses to go trick or treating. But it seems the costume makers are changing that tradition by using less and less fabric on every costume … or pieces of them are just disappearing.
We all know that fun little cheery song we all used to sing when we were little you know it ,it goes “trick or treat smell my feet give me something good to eat”… Well is that song going to change just like our costumes did??? Who really knows? The costumes have gotten so skimpy that it’s gotten hard for the students here at Bell to find costumes that will fit the dress code. These days’ girls have to wear leggings and under shirts in order to even consider the costumes that are in stores. Even the kid costumes have gotten a little too short for their age. If you really look at their costumes they look exactly the same as the teens. Then the teen costumes look exactly like the woman costumes!!! So if you think about it, all of the costumes are exactly the same accept their all different sizes. So honestly there is no difference!!!!!!
Mrs. Rae says that Halloween is a time for fun and to dress up as funny looking things or our favorite characters. But our favorite things and characters aren’t easy to dress up as if the costumes (Continued on the next page)
