On April 15th students in
3rd through 6th grade, along
with friends and family, at Cannon
Falls Elementary School
joined together in support
of Molly Thomforde and others
diagnosed with diabetes to
raise $5,000 in the first School
Walk for Diabetes. In return,
Molly agreed to kiss the leading
source of insulin, a pig.
The students walked along
the school’s property line. The
walk involved an obstacle course
and informational stations closer
to the school, including a station
for testing glucose levels
and a station providing water
and snacks.
The students surpassed
their original goal of $5,000 by
nearly $14,000 to donate to the
American Diabetes Association.
One participant in the walk was
fourth grader Taylor Bickman. “I
was so happy for Molly when I
heard we raised almost $19,000!
Everyone was cheering and I
felt proud to be a part of something
so important,” Taylor said
of the event.
At the end to the day the
crowd gathered around Molly
in anticipation of watching her
kiss the pig, which she did enthusiastically.
