On Thursday, January 18th the ACMS Journalism class took their very first field trip to the ABC 7 News Studio in L.A. Diane Medina, the Vice President of Diversity and Community Relations, and Aaron G. Voss, the Senior Media Manager, gave the journalism class tours around the facility. Mrs. Thacker, one of the founders and teachers of the class, was anxious to come a long and share the experience. We all got to witness a live news broadcast and a live cut-in, learned how the news gets put together, and went behind the scenes to learn how the audio and video operators of the news station work. Meeting the weatherman and anchors was exciting for the students and teachers. We were able to walk on the green screen with Danny Romero. “I loved when I got to see how the green screen works,” said 8th grader Katelyn Evenson. Even the Journalism teacher, Ms. Ercek, had something great to say about the day. “The students were well behaved, knowledgeable. We learned things that could not have been experienced in a classroom, ” she stated. Each student received an ABC news reporter pad and pen as a memento of the visit. Mrs. Medina was so impressed with the caliber of students we had, we were invited to return next year. Overall, the journalism students and teachers had a very productive day, ending in the news station’s prized cafeteria where we enjoyed plentiful fries, burgers, sandwiches, and more. Then it was back to the bus for the ride home, and an experience we’ll never forget.
