When people hear about the Black Student Union, most of the time they immediately think and say, “I’m not joining that because I’m not black,” before they even wonder or ask what it’s about. First off, you don’t have to be an African American in order to join the Black Student Union. Most students make this conclusion solely on the title of the club, but the truth is that the club focuses on activities related to the African American culture. So don’t be afraid to join the club just because you are not of this race. As shown by its fliers posted around the campus, it is open for everyone, and everyone of any race is encouraged to join. Now that this matter has been cleared, what really is the Black Student Union, or BSU? Started in 2001, the still alive and active Black Student Union is a movement run by students whose intentions are to give back and to help out the community. It is a community service oriented movement, and a lot of service and volunteer activities are involved. “We do canned food drives, toy drives, and other activities. For Thanksgiving we’re going to do another canned food drive and donate the foods we gathered,” said Black Student Union member Kristy Hardiman. BSU has already planned their drive for the upcoming holidays. “This Christmas we plan to have a toy drive and give them to the Carson Family Center,” stated Black Student Union advisor Cheryl Harris. Of course, as it is a community service oriented movement, all the activities performed are done for free. What sets Black Student Union apart from most community service related clubs is that there are no particular volunteer hours are recorded. Unlike other clubs with president, vice president, etc positions, there are no office positions held as every members of the movement contribute their ideas and give their best efforts to give back to the community.
Not only do the Black Student Union members spare time to do community services, they also participate in other school related events, dance performances, and talent shows. Ultimately, the purpose of the movement is to mainly promote unity and African-American history and culture as well as to contribute to the community. “As a multicultural group, we care about the others and the community. We want to give back, help them out and make a difference. We also give a scholarship every year to a selected dedicated member who actively contributes and fulfills their part as a Black Student Union member,” added Harris. Behind all the activities and events is the underlying and promising fun and excitement the members contribute and share and that the movement has to offer. “The members are really nice. They have a very positive and cheerful attitude. Working together as a group and being able to help out at the same time is a really great and fun experience,” said BSU member Ayanna Coleman. Black Student Union members are constantly encouraging more and more students to join, regardless of your race to be a part of an active and worthwhile group. “Joining the club will allow students to have a broader horizon of knowledge. They will gain and improve their leadership skills while at the same time have fun being part of a strong unity,” commented Coleman. So if you’re thinking of helping out or doing something new or worthwhile without missing out on the fun, Black Student Union definitely offers this opportunity. Don’t hesitate to check it out Thursdays at lunch in Room G4.
