As viewers continue to tune in to their weekly dose of American Idol, student council members decided to hold a singing contest of their own.
Glendale Idol was put together to raise funds for freshman Queen Lowe and sophomore Wesley James, two students who were recently diagnosed with cancer.
The premise was simple: each episode of Glendale Idol would air during second block.
Students were then invited to vote for their favorite contestants during lunch-each quarter donated was equal to one vote.
The last performance for the final three contestants was live at the Spring Sports Assembly, in front of the student body.
Sophomore Alexa Kilgore and seniors Maksat Erkinbek-Uulu and Brandon Russell played guitar, rapped and sang with soul to win the votes of their viewers.
The final vote came in April 7 when Kilgore was named 2008 Glendale Idol, having won over students with her rendition of “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree” by K.T. Tunstall.
“We made about $200 in quarters,” senior cabinet member Dani Detelich said. “It’s not very much, but hey, it works. We helped.”
