Twelve seniors and eight juniors return this year with one goal in mind: make it to State and play in the championship game.
The Lady Falcons return with a promising amount of talent. They lost only two seniors, Emily Jordan and Jeni Frewin, last year, Also, their top scorers, Lindsey Sprouse and Molly Brewer, return this season.
Along with making it to State, the team has some other goals.
“I really want to beat Kickapoo and Catholic,” said senior Katie Brewer.
Some of the challenges that the team will face are previous injuries to three of their key players, Lindsey Sprouse, Emily Cline, and Ashley McWilliams.
Senior Lindsey Sprouse recently broke her jaw in a car accident, and there is some doubt she will be fully recovered by the start of the season.
“The doctor said I would be ready by the first game, but I’m still afraid I’ll get hit in the face or fall down on my face,” said Sprouse.
Junior Emily Cline had a recent injury to her ankle, and she has had a slow recovery with it. She is confident, however, that she will be at her full potential when the season starts.
She said, “My ankle is a lot better and there is no more pain, but it still gets pretty soar. I ice it after every practice or any workout I do.”
Senior Ashley McWilliams is also still recovering from a torn ACL that occurred last season.
Many of their teammates fear an injury could repeat itself.
Brewer said, “I just don’t want Sprouse or Cline or anyone to get hurt again.”
One factor that makes the Falcons confident is their strength in scoring. With Lindsey Sprouse, Molly Brewer, and Emily Cline leading the offensive, they are sure to have high numbers in the scorebook.
“We will be good at putting the ball in the back of the net, but we’re not as consistent as we’d like to be,” said Cline.
The seniors this year share a very close bond. In fact, most of them have played together since the age of 13, so they know each other’s style of play.
Also, the team will have what senior Hannah Garrad describes as “a very strong underclass” to rely on.
This team somewhat resembles a family, and many of the players even call Coach Jeff Rogers ‘Papa.’
Senior Mindy Moffe said, “Coach is seriously like a second Dad. He would do anything for us, he even gives us the ‘prom’ talk.”
Even with injuries and limited time to prepare, the Falcons have a strong urge to succeed in the upcoming season. Competing in a State Championship would be a great last memory of the team they’ve loved so much.
Lindsey Sprouse said, “This is like the last time I’ll get to play with all these friends I’ve played with since the first grade. I just want to make it great.”
