Kid Cudi Album Review

“Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager” revolves around the reality that Scott Mescudi, a.k.a. Kid Cudi, lives every day.  With lyrics that refer to Plain Pat, his longtime friend and producer, his drug addiction, and even his own mother, this album is a representation of his life.

The first track on the album is “Scott Mescudi vs. The World” and it strikes a reminiscent of old-time Cudi combined with a hint of something unidentifiable; maybe that’s due to the extremely catchy chorus sung by Cee-Lo Greene.  This song repeatedly references the ‘other side,’ or what Mescudi perceives as after-reality. This chapter continues with “Mojo So Dope” and “Ashin Kusher,” two songs that combine classic confident Kid Cudi lyrics with a type of flow he has never attempted before.

Next comes “Erase Me” is a more collaborative genre song that sounds like a mix of rock and rap. Probably one of the most identifiable songs on the album, this song is sure to make an impact on listeners’ ears. Kanye West is featured, and his verse is respective, but somewhat out of place.

“Mr. Rager” is one of the deepest songs on the album, and a personal favorite. With lyrics such as, “When will this fantasy end? When will the heaven begin?” this song classifies life as a journey, with real and unreal elements.

Cudi also shows his soft side on this album with “All Along,” yet another extremely personal song. The chorus repeats, “All along I guess I’m meant to be alone, out there on my own.” In the background are orchestral instruments accompanied with a soft percussion beat.

The last two tracks on the album are “GHOST” and “Trapped in My Mind.” The two together make the perfect combination to end this fantastic journey through Mescudi’s reality. The chorus of “GHOST” is probably the stongest representation of how Mescudi feels about his life — “the people I met, and the places I’ve been, are all that will make me the man I so proudly am. But I want to know one thing, when did I become a ghost?”

With “Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr.Rager,” Kid Cudi has once again proven himself towards the top alternative hip-hop, and one of the most unique artist of our time.
