On Feb. 7, 1964, the Fab Four stepped off an airplane from England onto American soil for the first time. Two days later, on Feb. 9, the Beatles gave their first U.S. performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Exactly 48 years later in 2012, I am writing a review for drummer Ringo Starr’s latest solo album, “Ringo 2012.”

Many legendary musicians that have since branched out on their own have the problem of losing their flair, or trying to shift to a style that is just not them. Not so with Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr.

The immensely talented drummer/singer has never lost his touch, and hits such as “Photograph” and “It Don’t Come Easy” from the 70s showed his great solo ability.

“Ringo 2012” features your typical Ringo. The nine songs have catchy melodies, skillful drum beats and guitar solos. Starr uses the same, powerful vocals that he has always had to good effect. Starr’s voice is always easily recognizable; it’s very distinctive.

Lyrically, Starr is all about peace and love. “Anthem,” the album’s opener, is a great example. Starr also hints at his amazing past with the Beatles in the song “In Liverpool.” While “Wings” is the most popular song on iTunes, “Think It Over” and “Wonderful” are also exceptional songs that are easy to get stuck in your head.

While “Ringo 2012” may not rank as high compared to Starr’s other solo works, it still is a solid continuation of his successful, independent career. Starr is now 71, and is still doing what he loves most. And he is good at it. Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band also have a tour coming up in Europe.

“Ringo 2012” is definitely an album for Beatles fans to give a listen.
