For me, high school has never been a dog-eat-dog world. I’ve never been in the position of Lindsay Lohan in “Mean Girls” when she sees high school as some odd sort of jungle. So how exactly have I been surviving it? Through ignorance? Not exactly.
I have learned to survive high school by realizing that by the time we are adults in the real world, by the time we’ve got actual careers after college, that it isn’t going to matter whether or not we were the coolest kids in school. It won’t matter what our GPA was down to the thousandths place. It really won’t even matter whether you were number 48 in your class or number 123.
All that will matter 10, 20, even 30 years from now is whether or not you have any regrets. That is how I have survived high school. I’ve survived it by making friends that I know I could never live without, by doing all of the things I’ve wanted to do.
But most importantly, I’ve learned the art of not freaking out.
Really, that’s how you survive high school—by not worrying about every little thing. It’s about learning how to laugh at yourself and go with the flow. If you can’t learn how to laugh at yourself and let the little stuff go, if you can’t learn to be more chill, you won’t make it. You’ll become stressed out to the point where your brain will fall out of your ears and you’ll absolutely fall to pieces.
Just relax.
