As students walk through the Commons waking for the day, most may have noticed the cart placed across from A La Carte. Mondays through Thursdays, from 7 to about 7:30, Mrs. Thoman and the Special Education students are now delivering coffee, hot chocolate and tea to those who need that extra pick-me-up in the morning or to go along with the newly instated morning breakfast in the main lunch line.
“We wanted to create a program to help them learn basic trades such as greeting people and counting change,” Mrs. Thoman said.
Thoman is assisted by Culinary Arts teacher Mrs. Ann Bradway to give the students an opportunity to bake so more items can be included in the menu.
Thoman said that the idea was created during OGT week last year when she and her students brought in snacks such as doughnut holes during class.
“As the students were eating, the idea just spawned and led to where we are today,” Thoman said.
According to Thoman, the Hot Spot Coffee Shop will run just like a business.
“This opportunity is great for them as it will train them to get integrated into the workforce,” Thoman said.
