Bumping the reigning Lake Blue Streaks off their throne, the Viking volleyball team went 12-0 in the Federal League, winning the second league title in school history ending a seven-year title drought.
The team clinched the title Oct. 8 against Lake with a 3-0 win and according to senior Brittani Palomba, it was priceless.
“It feels great especially since last year we let the title fall through our fingertips,” she said. “It has been awhile and it felt good.”
Coach Mia Thomas has coached the Vikings for ten years, and has always kept her philosophies the same.
“In general, we try to teach life goals, sportsmanship and teamwork,” she said. “We try not to get too high in good times, or too low in the bad times.”
This year’s team captains include Palomba, and seniors Taylor Forbes, Laura Kay and Taylor Roman. According to junior Maggie Desrosiers, the seniors show great leadership.
“They keep us on track and are a very good example for demeanor and presence,” she said.
After accomplishing their first goal to win the Federal League, they have raised the bar for the remainder of the season. Thomas said that the goal is to win districts to advance to regionals.
“This group was extremely gratifying and it was nice to know they achieved their goal,” she said. “The girls were driven and happy to win.”
The team’s record is 17-4 and according to Thomas, the girl’s attitude is helping them succeed.
“This team has great chemistry and everyone does what they need to do to get the job done,” she said.
Desrosiers agreed and said it helps the team to be stronger.
“[We get along] really well,” she said. “We have a lot of activities and we work well together.”
The success of the team has also been directly related to the fans.
“This is the very first time I could remember a great cheering section,” Thomas said. “The fans really added support, fun and motivation for the girls. It was fun to get major sport support for such a minor program.”
