Every spring, The Lab School Thespian Society hosts a student play, usually a composition of Shakespeare. This year the new thespian president, Emma S., has chosen to perform the renowned play "Street Scene" by Elmer Rice. Both Emma and Mr. Miskell are excited about this performance. The entire story takes place on the street in front of an old New York apartment, between one evening and the next afternoon. The individual fates of eight neighboring Manhattan families intertwine during this brief stretch of time. Many of the seniors, myself included, are saddened that this is our last Lab School production, however we are excited to move on to a larger stage -- or even take a step in front of the camera -- such as Emma S, Julia T, and Kate W.
"Street Scene" is a play with a rather large cast of 36. With this being the case, there are no "main roles"; however, each character is a prominent role within their own story. For instance, Sam Kaplan and Rose Murrant are prominent characters within their story within the play.
Mr. Miskell also comments, "a big part of choosing any production, especially this one, is what type of cast we have. For this year in particular, the drama department wanted to experiment with the 20's and 30's era." Mr. Miskell looked at places such as Signature Theater, here in D.C., for inspiration.
Some of the seniors have been with Mr. Miskell since their first day of freshman year, and he says that "...students often mourn their last performance, but it's important and appropriate... students often don't pursue theater in college, but might pursue another form of art." He always looks forward to the spring production.
The play will take place on May 12-14th at 7pm. Tickets are $5 per student or child and $10 per adult. The play will take place in the Kelly Theater. Enjoy the show folks!
