It’s hard to believe that 58 years ago, there was no fire station in the town of Middlesex. The Middlesex Hose Company was organized in 1942 and through the years has been a social gathering place as well as the resident fire department, even though it split into two separate organizations in 1944. The fire station is also home to the Sirenettes, an active ladies’ group that supports our community whenever it is in need. You probably know them for their roast beef suppers, the main fundraiser that began in the late sixties. The history of this venerable institution is long and very remarkable.

The first fire truck in Middlesex was not purchased until 1944 because of World War Two. Metal was very scarce during this time period because it was used to make bullets, guns and other things needed for fighting. Back then it would’ve cost $1,500 to $5,000 to purchase a new fire truck. The modern price is over $150,000. Before the first station was built, it was kept in the barn of one of the Firemen. Technology back when the Middlesex Hose Company began was very different from what firefighters work with today. They often filled buckets with water from the troughs horses drank from, and had metal tanks with hoses used to tote water, called Indian tanks. They were very heavy and could be very awkward to carry, so the fire truck was a welcome addition to the department.

In 1969, Middlesex had something that no other Fire Department in the state had- fire women. They work alongside the firemen and, in some situations, were all the manpower the department had available. These incredible ladies form the Middlesex Fire Sirenettes, a group that was started in 1964.They help to benefit the community in any way they can as well as help the firemen. They are hard working and donate to many causes, including their ongoing support of the Operation Teddy Bear project. If a child has been in a car accident or a fire, they give them a teddy bear to help them feel better. They host a Christmas party with Santa Claus as well as go caroling in Vine Valley every year.

The Fire Department and ladies’ auxiliary are very dependable and work very hard, but they are always open to new members and assistance from the public. Every last Saturday of the month from March until October, Roast Beef Suppers are held at the fire station and help is always appreciated. You can also contact the fire station if you are interested in joining the 85 members that make up the Middlesex Fire Department. They would also like to remind everyone to stay fire safe in their homes. Thanks to the Middlesex Hose Company and Fire Sirenettes for all that they have done and continue to do for our community!
