A Letterman: A secondary or college student who has earned a letter in a particular activity, especially a varsity sport.

For years Colfax High School has focused on, and recognized the athletes in our school who participate in a varsity sport. They do this by rewarding them with a letter for his/her letterman jacket. Time and devotion go into that letter and allows fellow classmates recognize the accomplishments of others by seeing the letter displayed. However, athletes are not the only students at our school who deserve a letter.

There are many students at CHS who spend hours a week in a certain club or activity. They may not be athletic but does that mean their contribution isn’t as important? For the most part, they don’t perform in front of an audience, they perform behind the scenes making a difference, or making something beautiful. That is something that they should be proud of and something they can let others know that they are proud of. What a better way then to reward their spent hours with a letter so they too can show others and cherish the years of high school in the years to come.

Letters should be a high school memorabilia that all students can have a chance to obtain whether they are athletic or not. Students have different interests, and maybe want to obtain a letter in a way that would be enjoyable for them. I am all for the letter and for the letterman jacket I just think that it should be something that every high school student, if they have that determination, should be able to earn.
