At-a-glance

A local sophomore takes an annual trip out west to snowboard. Here he is sitting in a Terrain Park in Keystone, Colorado. -
As summer is fading away and the cold weather is creeping in, more people seem to be bundling up and staying inside, but local snowboarders are waxing their boards, and buying new gear to get ready for the new season.

“Sunburst is planning on opening as soon as possible,” said a Sunburst representative. “It all depends on how cold it gets and how fast we can make snow.”

Last year Sunburst opened November 3rd. Sunburst is also hoping for a better season this year. Last year, a strange thaw wasn’t so good for the hopeful resort. From around Christmas until January snow was melting, and it was becoming an issue trying to keep up with snow production.

Sunburst, like every year, will be hosting competitions. Competitions are hosted by USASA (United States of America Snowboard Association) and Moda 3, a “lifestyle” shop out of Milwaukee. They hold competitions for down hill skiing, races, jumps, and many other different types of competitions. Sunburst offers competitions all winter long.

This year, Sunburst has made new changes. They have widened runs and added a new park called Black Forest Terrain Park. This new park will be over 1300 feet long and will include 3 new boxes. These new boxes will include a roller coaster box, a swerve box, and an S rail.

Tyler Schuppe, a local snowboarder, has been snowboarding for three years now. Schuppe snowboards on a Burton Custom X board, Raiden Blot bindings, and Burton Hail boots. When asked on his thoughts on Sunburst he replied, “They have a good park for Wisconsin.”
