Campbellsport High School has decided to become part of the movement towards a cure for cancer. Now, they are looking to the community for support.
The students at Campbellsport High School made the decision to hold a Relay for Life this year. The event will start on May 14th at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 a.m. the following morning, May 15th. The relay is basically a twelve hour walk done by teams. At least one member from each team must be walking at all times.
Each team raises money for the American Cancer Society. Campbellsport will be recruiting teams up until the event; however, the $100 registration fee will be bumped up to $150 after April 8th.
While the event will be twelve hours of entertainment, what is most important is the awareness that will be raised. “It is a time to honor survivors and it is also a time for community members to recognize the fight and support their family and friends through each step,” said Jill Goebel, Campbellsport’s guidance counselor. This is what Relay for Life is truly about: cancer is a big battle and can’t be fought alone. Mike Cho from the Youth Initiatives Department at the American Cancer Society believes “it will create awareness that every person out there can help fight cancer by volunteering their time, raising some money and remembering to live as healthy a life as possible.”
This Relay is giving everybody in the community a chance to help, donate money or supplies, join a team, or come and support a cancer victim in their life. Erin Nelson, an art teacher at the high school, is a team leader and made this decision because she herself is a cancer survivor and wants to thank her co-workers, friends, and family for helping and supporting her throughout her treatment. Cancer is changing lives all over the world: “It has changed my life tremendously, in so many ways and on so many levels,” said Nelson.
It will be a fun event for a serious cause, so join a team, camp out on the football field, listen to a live band play, enjoy exciting activities and get a little taste of culture at Campbellsport’s “Around the World” Relay for Life.
