This Valentine's Day students will be able to hear singing in third period classes. For the first time, the elite Jazz Choir sold singing Valentines to raise revenue to fund the choir program. Proceeds made from the sales of the Vlaentines go to the choir program for events such as choir trips, and Jazz Choir hopes to make $200.

The performers will be juniors Rotem Bluvstein, Jackie Gage and Miyuki Fukui. "We just thought it would be a cute idea" said Gage. "We thought 'Other schools have Valentine's Day grams, why don't we?' Also, we hope to bring more publicity to Jazz Choir and the choir program in general."

“Others asked about this idea, but none put as much work into it as these girls did,” said Morton. “They’re very responsible and I know I can trust them to get the job done.”

Bluvstein, Gage and Fukui will be the performers, as wel as junior Adi Fish; the girls will enter classes during third period to sing for the receivers. To save time, the girls will group together those within a class who received a Valentine and sing to them all at once. Those who receive a singing Valentine will also receive a card with a message from the buyer, although an anonymous Valentine may be purchased. The songs will last roughly one minute and the performance will feature dancing “choir-ography”. The music selection includes Gage’s arrangement of The Temptations classic “The Way You Do the Things You Do”.

“One thing I like about this idea is that this is more high school music,” said Morton. According to Bluvstein, the songs are more difficult in comparison to the singing Valentines sold at Cupertino Middle School and are more difficult to sing becuase of complicated arrangements.

While an unlimited quantity of singing Valentines may be bought and Valentines can be sent to teachers, since the group of singers is small, they will not be able to perform for the P.E. classes. Although some teachers did not approve the Valentines, according to Bluvstein, “most of them were very supportive. They thought it was a wonderful idea and they’re glad we’re doing it.”

The Valentines cost $2 each and were sold at lunch starting Feb. 4; sales ended at brunch today, Feb. 13.
