Going back to basics for the girls varsity basketball team seemed like a major goal to accomplish at the beginning the season, but having had limited time left in this past season, the team paid closer attention towards a more precise practicing technique.

With the team only having had four seniors and eight new sophomores this year, it was in its year of growth, according to senior Lauren Tomosada.

The team captains had been focusing on getting new players comfortable with fundamental techniques in time for the beginning of the season, which began on Jan. 5., but nearing the end of the season, they found that devoting much practice time on basics was not in their best interest. Instead, the team focused its attention towards going over plays and improving what they did poorly on previous games.

"We've been doing a lot of different plays with [scrimmaging] and drills to simulate play like situations. We're not really focusing on basics, because basics are incorporated into all the plays," said sophomore Katie Almas, before the end of the season. "We're looking at the bigger picture."

Drawing attention to reenacting plays on the court also helped build team moral, an aspect that senior Emily Blazensky, one of the team captains, felt was an important key factor in the way the team plays overall.

Blazensky stated that one of the team's major goals this past season had been to build confidence amongst the players, seeing that most are relatively new, young players.

The end of the season game against Lynbrook High School was held on Feb. 12.
