Seniors Drew Haven, Dayv Doberne and Aaron Wong compete in round two of the Bay Area Quiz Kids competition. The team played against Hillsdale High School and won 600-90.
The Bay Area Quiz Kids competition is one that seniors Aaron Wong, Drew Haven, Dayv Doberne and junior Robert Nishihara do not prepare for. Bay Area Quiz Kids is a television game show for high schools in which two teams of three students compete to answer the most questions in various topics. The topics cover a broad variety, some being geography, performing arts and sports.

Homestead first started competing on the show last year. The school was enrolled in the competition and as the coach of the National Science Bowl (NSB) team, science teacher Chris Nafrada was chosen as the coach for the Quiz Kids team as well.

Without preparation, the team merely goes to the studio with only their knowledge. “We just walked in and were like, ‘Hey, we’re ready to play,’” said Wong, a returning team member from last year.

"It isn’t something you study for,” said Nafrada. “These kids are so well-versed in what they know. They love just knowing things.”

The four members of the team are also on the NSB team and decided to join Quiz Kids because they enjoy these types of competitions.

Haven said that he likes the academic side of the competition, so he joined the team. “I was already used to competing in science bowl,” he said. “The [Quiz Kids] competition is very similar.”

With only four members on the team, three being seniors, the team is looking for more members.

The number one aspect Wong believes a person should have to join the team at Homestead is curiosity.

“It’s helpful if you’re good academically,” said Doberne. “It’s good if you know lots of random stuff.”

Each school is allowed to bring at up to 10 members to watch the show. “One requirement: bring a studio audience,” said Wong. “We want people to cheer us on.”

The first round was aired on Jan. 19 in which Homestead played Archbishop Riordan and won 510-150. Homestead also won the second round against Hillsdale 600-90. The second round will be aired on Mar. 22 on Saturday at 2 p.m. on KRON4.

The filming of round three will be on Mar. 1. If you are interested in being a part of the studio audience contact Chris Nafrada. For more information about the team and to join the team contact Aaron Wong, Robert Nishihara, Dayv Doberne or Drew Haven.
