The Florida Scholastic Press Association District 2 Fall Workshop held at University of Florida on October 13 proved to be a “…very productive experience…” said Julie Mancini, Director for FSPA District 2, only after a minor bump in the road with campus police, when police refused to unlock the classroom doors so the workshop could take place.  After a short wait, Wayne Garcia, executive director for FSPA, who works part time at UF discovered he had a set of keys on him to unlock the doors.
But the whole day was definitely not focused on outfoxing the police. The day moved on to an opening session, where keynote speaker Wayne Garcia spoke about the future of journalism.  This was followed by three sessions where the 24 attending students and teachers could attend workshops of their choice and a tour of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the students.
FSPA District 2 encompasses 24 Florida counties: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwanee, Taylor, Union and Wakulla, but only students from Dunnellon Middle School, Dunnellon High School and Keystone Heights in Clay County attended the workshop.
Florida Scholastic Press Association membership is open to all student media, including yearbooks, newspapers, television production, online media and literary magazines. FSPA membership is currently only $30 per year per publication. Students in FSPA member publications are able to compete in various contests, attend the State Convention and earn members-only scholarships.
Dunnellon High School editor Laura Riley attended design basics, taught by Herff Jones representative Stephen Wallace. Riley said of her experience at the workshop, “The workshop was a good experience for everyone who went because it expanded our knowledge in the different areas of journalism.”
During Session 2, Riley and fellow yearbook editor Rachel Horne had Dunnellon High School’s yearbook critiqued by FSPA president Joe Humphrey. “He liked the idea of our yearbook and he understood our theme,” Horne said. Riley added, “He gave good advice on our yearbook.”
Following lunch at the Reitz Union and the stadium tour, freshman Scott Romero attended a leadership and teambuilding session, presented by Herff Jones associate Stephanie Shumate. Romero found the presentation very educational and said, “It was awesome. I really had a good time.”
Ariel Buchko attended the design trends presentation in Session 4, presented by Amanda Ortman. Buchko found the information really valuable, and sad she heard a lot of good ideas.
At the end of the day, Dunnellon students (and one Dunnellon teacher), had earned some recognition: Junior Kayla McMann, who is involved in television production, yearbook and newspaper,  was chosen as the Student Representative of District 2, which means she will meet with the other student representatives at a special meeting in Orlando in November to plan the State Convention. McMann also earned an excellence in leadership award.
Dunnellon High School Tigervision teacher JR Smith earned the title of District 2 Teacher of the Year. She will represent the district at the State Convention in April as she vies for the State Title.
Four awards were given in design and four more in photography. These awards were all earned by Dunnellon students. Dunnellon Middle students Lindsey Smith and Londyn Swanson and Dunnellon High students Rachel Horne and Courtney Pike earned design awards, while middle schoolers Jennifer Macedo and Brianna Florvilus and high schoolers Drew Rondeau and Gaige Evans earned photography awards.
