On Thursday March 5, the class’ auto, media productions and drafting and design competed in the Skills Region five competitions at Peoria High School. They had competed against 15 other schools in many different skills groups. Each person had their own unique competition and each person had their own skill with CTE, Career Technology Education, and with CAD, Computer Aided Drafting.

“In auto we go through and do different events with testers, scanners, and do work on the cars,” junior Michael Shaffer said. There is a booklet that will give a job description and then the students will compete against one another to win.

“This was the clubs first year going,” sophomore Jacob Anderson said.

Each school went  to see how well their students work with each event and to see how well their school is at informing them on the information they need to do well in that career. Within the competition, some students of our school are not in the Skills USA club.

“I’m not part of the Skills USA club but I am going to be part of the state competition,” Shaffer said. The club went to test out the competition and to see how well the other schools have taught the students within the career titles.

“We didn’t go last year because we didn’t have anyone to sponsor us,” Anderson said. Students that went and attended the competition were taken out of school to compete.

“I missed a full day of school which means that I am going to have to do make up work,” Anderson said.

“I don’t like doing make up work but I like that I get to learn things I wouldn’t here at school.”

It lasts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is run on a schedule so every student gets a chance to go through every event possible. In the auto four class every student in that class was chosen to participate.

School competitions give students the chance to win money or prizes that win help them in their future career.

“I wanted to go and do all the competition events that I could go do because you can win scholarships and win tools from different tool companies,” Shaffer said.
