At-a-glance

New DVD release, 'Quantum of Solace,' does not impress staff reporter Embed This Article

The newly released DVD of the 22nd James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, is an action thriller that strikes the tone of a more fantastical and preposterous quality.

Continuing from the last film, Casino Royale, Vesper Lynd, 007’s treacherous yet beautiful lover, had died mysteriously.

Daniel Craig is back as agent 007, and there is a dry coolness to the way he portrays Bond, whether in shooting a single bullet to ramming himself into a wall in a chase scene. Basically, like all of the 007 movies, the British special agent is invincible except to some scratches from the shattered glass and, of course, the impulses of his own vengeful nature – Vesper is still on his mind.

Near the opening scene, Great Britain finally uncovers the world’s most powerful underground organization that has men everywhere, even as actual bodyguards of M (Judi Dench), Bond’s boss. This terrorist network leads to the president of an environmentalist organization, Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), who seeks to rule the world by gaining control of nations’ water supplies. Bond, with his new unwilling and mysterious partner, Camille (Olga Kurylenko), tries to end the corruption of world leaders while quenching his desire for revenge of both their murdered loved ones.

The action in Quantum of Solace is creative and top-notch, though at times, scenes are obviously choreographed. Especially during the flying-in-the-air scene, it is comparable to the humorous acrobatics of Kung Fu movies. The plot is somewhat entertaining, but the action sequences are almost excessive (and I do not find myself saying this too much).

I would give this movie three out of five stars.
