As the baseball and softball seasons come to an end, the teams finished with a bang at their Centennial games on April 29.
Throughout the season the teams have played their best, but the final game was what really showed their strength.
“They played a great game,” softball coach Nick Rizer said. “It’s probably one of the best games of the year.”
The softball and baseball teams were fortunate enough to make it to regions and are now region champions.
“[To go to regions] is the goal every year,” Rizer said. “The team worked hard and it’s nice when they work hard at something and achieve their goal.”
For baseball, their region dominance is still going strong.
“This is the seventh consecutive region championship for us,” baseball coach Eric Gardner said. “It was definitely the most rewarding game because we’re a young team. Our first game against Centennial was a loss and this was sort of a payback game; it’s always good to beat your rivals.”
To prepare for the game the girls on the softball team did nothing out of the ordinary.
“We just do what we do for every game and that’s practice,” Rizer said. “It was just a big game because it was against Centennial.”
Gardner and Rizer are proud of the way their teams performed during the games.
“There was a lot of change in the score,” Gardner said. “On the [baseball] team, David Hall and Tyler Crawford pitched. Grady Oulton and AJ Robinson both had hits to help win the game. They really worked together.”
Rizer’s reaction to the softball team’s performance was also positive.
“The girls really progressed,” Rizer said. “They played their best and it’s really nice to see them come out and play a strong game.”
Both teams won the Desert West Region Crown and softball will open the state tournament as the defending 2008, 5A Division II State champions.
On Saturday, May 2, the teams will host the first round of their State tournaments’ at home; the first game for baseball will be against Willow Canyon at 11:00 a.m. and softball is also scheduled for the same time against Rincon High.
Leaving the regular season, the baseball team had a record of 20-9 and softball had a record of 24-5-1.
