On Friday, April 15, the SMHS Student Council for the 2011-2012 school year was officially declared after a day of speeches and voting.

Junior Benjamin Rutherford describes the moment when he learned he will be the Senior Vice President for the upcoming school year.

“I was totally excited,” Rutherford said. “I just had a big smile on my face; I think I cheered right in the middle of class.”

This is the first time Rutherford has run for a position in the SMHS Student Council. This is true for sophomore Josephine Uong as well.

When asked why she decided to run, she responded by saying, “Mostly because of my friends: most of them said I should run,” Uong said.

Uong will be the Junior Class Treasurer for the upcoming year.

“I’m really excited for next year,” Uong said.

Rutherford is excited for next year as well.

“I’m representing the senior class, and it means a lot of responsibility,” Rutherford said. “I’m ready for the challenge.”

According to these students, there are big hopes for next year.

“I hope that me, as well as the whole group, will make it a year that everyone will enjoy. I want next year to bring people memories that will last forever,” Rutherford said.
