Went it comes to making movies, Mr. Abeita’s video production class is the best. The class teaches you about how to make movies, what goes into making movies, and how to use a video camera.
The movies that you get to film are entered in some competitions. One such is the 505 Youth Film Festival, a competition that gives all high school and middle school students the chance to make a movie. The 505 Film Festival was started by Mr. Abeita in 2007. The movie will be judged at first by Mr. Abeita and a handful of Valley students. The movie makers’ names are kept secret so every one has a fair chance. Every movie is separated into 5 categories: music video, science-fiction, action, and flash comedy. The movies will be judged according to the category they enter. In May the student films will be played at the historic Kimo Theater downtown. The final movies will be judged by an industry professional. Last year’s festival went better than expected with over 300 movies entered in the film festival. Many students that had attended the festival said that it was great for being the very first of its kind.
As for this year’s film festival, the hope is there will be more competetion than last year’s because more people will have submitted movies this year. If that is the case, finals may go on longer than last year.
The festival will start some time in May. The date is still undecided, but if you want to contribute your movie, April 15th is the deadline.
As well as watching a lot of good movies, the event will allow you to see the winning film and study what the judges want in the films. For more information on the competition, speak with Mr. Abeita in E-8.
