On campus there are two squads so magical and precise that anytime they perform they leave an audience in shock and wanting more. These two squads are the cheerleaders and the Vikettes. They are different in technique, and different in spirit, but both support our school, sports, and student body. By winning competitions, wearing spirited uniforms and being precise in all their routines, both squads never fail in putting on a great show.
The main difference is one team does mostly dancing and the other performs stunts. They both work very hard and intensely train to be the best. They both share the same moral fiber of champions and gladly represent our student body in a positive way, but why is there a rivalry between the two? When asked if a rivalry between the two was seen Candace Aragon (10th) responded, “It [doesn’t] look like it, but then sometimes it does.” When it comes to the personalities and members of the team themselves, most of them get along. However, when it comes down to performing, then there is a battle between the two.
The cheerleaders and Vikettes compete with each other to win the support, credit, and appreciation of the school. “They have two different styles of dance and it shows in their routines,” says DyAnna Garcia (10th). It’s hard to decide who is better between the Vikettes and cheerleaders, because the teams do two completely different things. They can’t be judged against one another, for in reality they are on the same team, the Valley Viking Team.
Based on interviews with Vikettes and cheerleaders it would seem that they get along great, but is that secret friendship the student body clearly doesn’t see real? “I don’t know all the people on the teams, but both seem pretty chill,” junior Mark Figueroa stated. With peace on the borders of these two all-girl squads, it is clear that they have their minds on the competition, in their respective sport, rather than on each other.
The Vikettes have won state three years in a row and plan to keep the tradition alive. The cheerleaders on the other hand took 2nd last year and plan to take 1st this year. Hopefully, both teams take state and possibly nationals. Sophomore and current cheerleader Miranda Zook stated, “I think we are both great teams that don’t get as much respect as we deserve.” Based on the facts, these lovely ladies deserve the recognition of our student body, for in their sport the motto goes: be the best or be beat by the best. Thus far, we are the best hands down.
