A little over a month ago, one of the most watched and exciting sporting event started. This was the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, better known as March Madness. First round games began on March 17 and ended with the National Championship game on April 6 in Detroit, MI. The top ranked team of the tournament was Louisville. The other three #1 seeds belonged to Pittsburgh, North Carolina, and Connecticut. The year was the first year that all teams seeded through #1-3 advanced to the Sweet 16. All four #1 seeds also made it to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive year.
Many did not enjoy this year’s tournament as much as others saying that there was not enough good games and hardly any upsets. There were a good amount of first round upsets, but not too many after that. There were no Cinderella teams such as last year’s Davidson or the 2006 George Mason team. The one upset that many did not have was Michigan State’s victory over top ranked Louisville in the Elite Eight. #3 seeded Villanova also made a surprise visit to the Final Four. The other two teams that made the Final Four were UConn and UNC. Michigan State had yet another upset over UConn, while UNC defeated ‘Nova easily. This put UNC and Michigan State facing each other in the National Championship. Although MSU had a huge crowd advantage, they could not pull out another upset, as UNC went on to win 89-72 behind star players: Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, and Wayne Ellington. The Tar Heels led by a tournament record 21 points at halftime. Ellington was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player and all three were named to the All-Tournament Team. UNC won all six games by a margin of 121 points, the highest since 1996. Coach Roy Williams also became of the four active coaches to win multiple titles. So instead of the fun and exciting three weeks that many fans are used to this time of year, all that was witnessed was the domination of one team throughout the entire tournament.
