Many may think it’s just a dog but despite that President Obama’s new dog has created quite a controversy in our nation. Not long ago the Obama’s adopted a Portuguese water dog, which they named Bo, from a Texas breeder. They had planned to teach their children responsibility by giving them the chance to take care of something completely dependent on them. Our nation seemed fairly excited about this idea.
When everyone found out where the dog was adopted from it bothered many people because of Obama’s promise last year during his campaign. He said that he would adopt the dog from a rescue shelter. This excited many organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States. When they found out where he got his dog, they were disappointed by this and felt that it may be a preview of what he may do further in his presidential term.
To smooth things over Obama gave a very rational explanation for his choice. Portuguese water dogs are active, affectionate, intelligent, and family-oriented. But the main reason for choosing this dog is that it’s fur is hypoallergenic. This is very good thing for the Obama’s. The president’s daughter, Malia, has allergies. Because of her allergies, the Obama’s were restricted on what kind of dog they could get. The controversy has calmed down a little but some may always feel that he could have found a shelter with that breed of dog.
