On April 24th, 2009, students from Ringgold, Charleroi, and Belle Vernon high schools gathered at Charleroi High School track to raise money for the All-Youth Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. Festivities began at 10 AM, when booths began frying up French fries and serving ice cream. The students from rival schools joined together for one cause, to find a cure for cancer. Teams began as earloy as September to raise money for the American Cancer Society ad continued to raise funds through the Relay by setting up shops and games at the track. The Relay lasted twelve hours and included cancer survivor ceremonies, a DJ, and a speaker for Belle Vernon who survived skin cancer while pregnant and has biked with Lance Armstrong. All in all, the All-Youth relay raised an enormous amount of money for the society.
If the All-Youth relay didn’t satisfy these students’ sweet tooth for helping others, anyone can opt to form or join a team in the Mon Valley Relay for Life, planned for June 27th in Monessen. To participate in the Relay, go to relayforlife.org/pamonvalley.
