At-a-glance

The Art of Murals Embed This Article
Every year murals line the halls nearly everywhere you turn. There's so many; each one holding a special style or unique piece all of their own. How does the mural project work? Why do we have it? And how does it benefit the students? Well, you are about to find out.

The mural project has been a beneficial project for Art 4 students since 1998. Since then, the project has flourished as a requirement for seniors in Art 4 project due to the large amount of positive feedback and comments by parents, students, and teachers alike. In fact, the original reason why it was started was because the halls of RHS were plain white. The walls needed a little spicing up. So, it was decided that in order to do so, the Art 4 students would have the privilege of painting some unique and colorful works of art.

This year is no different. The Art 4 students continue to show off their own distinct ideas through these murals. The students themselves find this to be a good idea as well.

"It's a good chance to let my imagination run free," stated Caitlin Garvey, an Art 4 and 3 student working on her mural this year, "I used a lot of my inspiration from fictional and paranormal books." Caitlin, like many of her Art 4 peers, has been working hard on her mural, but she still states that it is very fun and expressive, and a good way to show off your style and taste as well as to gain a sense of achievement from all of the previous Art classes.

Believe it or not, the entire class of Art 4 students is required to do this, so there are many paintings each year. So many, that even some of the much older ones have to be painted over.

There are a few simple requirements for this project, including: Knowledge from past Art classes, some type of background in painting, and, of course, a picture for your mural! That is, a school appropriate picture of course. As soon as the picture is approved by Mrs. Robison and Mr. Homa, the mural begins almost immediately in the first week of school, and can last from three to six weeks per person, depending on the student's mural.

Mrs. Robison, the teacher that helped to start the project, agrees that it is very good for the students as well.

"I love it," she states, "It helps the students express themselves, and it is very nice to see the different styles of each individual student."

Normally only Art 4 students are able to take part in this project, but it is possible to take Art 3 and 4 in the same year to do so. Though, due to the fact that there are some principles and details you must learn in Art 3 first, it is not preferred.

Mrs. Robison has mentioned that she would love to keep this project going for as long as possible, or, at least, for as long as she teaches Art 4. So you can expect for many more murals of different styles, tastes, and inspiration to keep appearing in the many years ahead of us.
