MHS Administration Takes Action Against Bathroom Vandalism
Advertising

MHS has recently been plagued by several cases of bathroom vandalism and the school’s administrators have begun a crack down.

‘We suffer from graffiti in all the bathrooms to differing degrees,’ said Principal Judy Landis. ‘The vandalism seems to be primarily in the boys bathrooms in the auditorium lobby, across from the main office and all three in the East Wing.’

Students and faculty have said that there is a range of different types vandalism that have occurred in the bathrooms.

‘There are always paper towels thrown everywhere, writing all over the walls. I’ve seen a few missing doors and windows,’ said junior John Zelli. ‘It is pretty upsetting. I go in to relax for a minute and it is just filthy in there.’

‘I have seen racist remarks, swastikas and intentionally clogged toilets,’ said senior Josh Rizzuto. ‘There are also really ‘cool’ people that throw all of the paper towels on the floor.’

‘Most of the graffiti is typically names, commentary about people’s preferences or looks and inappropriate drawings,’ explained Landis.

These acts of vandalism have taken up a large chunk of custodians’ time.

‘The two bathrooms in the East Wing took two people two days to repair from the damages and graffiti,’ said Landis.

The faculty has been making efforts to make it clear to students that vandalism is not something that will be tolerated. They are taking several new courses of action to combat this issue.

‘We are propping all the bathroom doors open so that any vandalism can be heard when someone walks by. This will also allow an adult to walk into the bathrooms unheard to see graffiti in process. Additionally, we are making a concerted effort to clean the bathrooms so that we can better identify the new graffiti as it appears. We are holding the last student seen coming out of the bathroom responsible for the damage. We hope that once everyone sees that we are being vigilant, that it will stop,’ said Landis who implored students to acted civilly.

‘We try to keep the school as clean and as nice as we can with 2,000 of us in the building.

We need your help to do that. I would hope you would treat this school with respect so that when we have guests, you can be proud.’
