As the “ca-rack” of the bat only
days away, it must only mean
one thing. It’s time for a new season
as the revamped, reloaded,
and rebuilt 2007 Corpus Christi
Hooks begin play on April 7th.
With the return of Manager Dave
Clark and standouts Juan Gutierrez
and Josh Bonifay. There’s
nothing stopping the Hooks
from repeating as Texas League
Champions.
Not only does the strive of competition
bring an atmosphere
like no other to Whataburger
Field, but attending a game
seems to be the “thing” to do for
many Flour Bluff students.
“Going to the games is always fun
to do,” sophomore Scott Thompson
said. “It gives everyone in Corpus
a thing to do.”
Last September, the Hooks defeated
the Witchita Wranglers in four
games of the TLCS (Texas League
Championship Series) to bring a
baseball title to Corpus Christi for
the fi rst time since 1958. The win
at Whataburger Field brought a
crowd of 8,400 fans faithful until
the last pitch. Numbers like these
are expected consistently throughout
the 2007 season.
“I think the Hooks will have a good
season this year,” senior Will Collier
said. “If they get into the playoff s,
I think they have the power to go
all the way and win the (Texas
League) Championship again.”
The 140 game season (70
home, 70 away), which has
brought the biggest names in
college to the Field already,
will host the 2007 Texas League
All Star Game on June 26th. The
match up brings the All Stars of
the Northern Division and the
All Stars of the Southern Conference
against each other for
a friendly afternoon “pick up”
game.
“The air of excitement is amazing
at a Hooks game,”junior Cody Warren said. “Everything just
builds up and the pressure (of the
players) can be felt in the stands.”
The Hooks begin home fi eld play
on April 12th against the Wranglers.
