Facebook, contrary to popular belief, is completely different from Myspace in many ways, and in my opinion, its those ways that make Facebook superior. Facebook is safer than Myspace because unless you are a friend of the person on the site then you cannot access their personal information like e-mail, address and age.
On Myspace, with one click of a button you have access to any information of any person without even having or signing into your account. All people who use the Internet have at one point used Google to search a person whether it be a famous person or a friend but either way when you Google them you inevitably get their online accounts like Myspace and Facebook. When people click the Facebook link they will not get all of your information. Instead they will get what Facebook users call a profile badge that shows the person searching your profile picture and only the information you feel comfortable sharing, like the school you go to, and your favorite color and they get that much about you only if they are logged in to the site.
The Myspace link, however, gives away any information and all things that you or your friends have posted allowing anyone to commit fraud under your name or access anything with a security password like “what is your girlfriend's name?” Myspace allows anyone, anywhere, to view copy, paste, repost, and advertise your entire life via the Internet. Facebook also informs you of the activities of all your friends and family online by having the option of posting things on the walls of your friends.
A wall is where your friends can come and see what you and your friends have been up to the new photos you posted and the comments that were made. Myspace doesn’t tell you what anyone is doing, it simply informs you that someone posted something to your comment board or on your photo but it fails to answer the question, which one of your friends is talking about you?
Facebook is also easier to manage. In contrast to the colorful screens and random buttons of Myspace that distract you from your original task and that refuse to tell you what they do until after you have clicked them and put your computer at risk for a virus or yourself at risk for fraud; Facebook explains exactly what each button and every part of its webpage does and even asks you if you really want to continue with an action before you do.
Facebook also tells you important dates in a less confusing and more organized fashion. It is also equipped with virus protection to protect your computer. Facebook holds many things over Myspaces’ head and it has proven itself not to be the flashiest social networking site but the better site.
