Stories of illegal steroid use amongst top baseball players have been circulating for over a decade but the most recent and most shocking article is The Mitchell Report. The report published a list of over 80 former and current baseball players connected to steroids, either by use or possession. Former outfielder and designated hitter Jose Canseco was mentioned an astonishing 105 times throughout the report followed closely by Barry Bonds with 103 references.
The use of steroids poses a major threat to the purity and honor of the sport. These guys apparently missed the memo that using steroids is cheating and cheating is corrupt and vile.
Not only is the use of steroids irresponsible, but it is also extremely laughable that some players actually bought the drugs over the Internet. If these athletes are going to do something illegal, they should at least make sure their purchases can’t be tracked by anyone with the computer skills of a fifth grader.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs is becoming the hot, new trend in baseball so why not roll with it? It will be similar to the cocaine/heroine fad of the young Hollywood debutantes. It works for the socialites and heiresses so MLB stars should be able to do illegal drugs too, right? I think not.
The Major League Baseball Association was slow to react to this problem and missed the early warning signs but they will take action. The sport will have year-round, unannounced testing and will also investigate any violations. An independent program will provide the testing and the dates will be random and more unpredictable.
