On June 1, 2008 Anna Coenen graduated from Insight School of Wisconsin at a ceremony held at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. Insight School of Wisconsin is a free online high school open to all Wisconsin students in grades 9-12.

Coenen was homeschooled up until her senior year of high school. "I was starting to worry about whether I would be able to get my diploma," she said. "I also wasn't sure I was getting the experiences I would need once I got to college." Through rigorous courses in subjects such as Chemistry, AP English Literature and Composition, and Spanish, Coenen was able to earn enough credits to walk across the stage at graduation and earn her diploma, and through the process gained valuable life experiences and friends that she may never have had.

Insight uses online learning to help students who may not be able to adapt to traditional high school. Students who attend Insight come from many different backgrounds. "Almost everyone I met has a different reason for deciding to go to Insight," Coenen said. "Some have children, others were expelled, some just wanted a challenge. For me, my parents decided it would be best for me to stay home for school."

Like most high schools, Insight has a principle, guidance counselor, and teachers available to students. Students are also given iMentors, a mentor who monitors the student’s progress and grades and makes sure they are headed in the right direction. Students are able to contact any of the staff members through email, phone, or instant messaging.

Insight School of Wisconsin began operating the Fall of 2007. Each student receives a laptop, headset, and printer, along with course materials such as textbooks, literature, and equipment. The actual 'classes' take place in an online environment where students, like Coenen, are able to interact with their teachers and peers. "I made so many friendships with people I never would have met otherwise," Coenen explains. "I am pretty shy, and Insight has helped bring me out of my shell a little."
