From video editing to anchoring, Channel 99 does it all. The Hanover schools’ TV channel works vigorously to keep students entertained and interested. It informs students of what is going on with schools around them and keeps them involved.
The program is where students intern at the news station for different positions, such as news casting, video editing, anchoring, set design, and sound effects. Each student has to try out for the position desired and is placed in what he or she is best at, but not all are accepted.
Senior Morgan Parrish applied and auditioned for news anchoring, and successfully achieved the spot. “If I was news anchor I would pack broccoli in everyone’s lunches,” Parrish said in her interview tape, which was both goofy and serious. Her love for Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy was what inspired her to desire to be a news anchor.
Along with Parrish, senior Kaitlyn Whitaker works on Channel 99. She has been involved for two years. She and Parrish attend ever A day session and they have chances to host sometimes if they want.
They both participated in the recent Public Service Announcement competition, where each broadcasting group entered a PSA video against drunk driving. The winner received an iPod touch and new film equipment.
Patrick Henry won first place with their video of different people on a stage saying how a loved one wouldn’t be coming home. “They deserved it. Theirs by far was the most creative and impacting,” Parrish said.
Channel 99’s PSA video was edited by a student from Patrick Henry, Sammie Wilson. All five people in the group worked on their own, but they decided to send hers in. It was the runner up along with three other videos. Two of the other runner ups were also PSA’s from other Channel 99 interns in other blocks. The fourth runner up was from a Mass Communications class at Deep Run.
Parrish and Whitaker enjoy working with the group of people from the station and like being involved with the skits and fun things they do.
The internship isn’t just for Hanover students. Any student in the Hanover district involved in broadcasting can audition.
