Imagine a lush tomato paired with crisp lettuce sitting atop melting cheese and a juicy burger. Now, picture it being whisked over to you by a roller skating waiter surrounded by a posse of fries. No, it’s not heaven, it’s Sonic Burgers.
Hanover County now has a slice of Sonic to call their own, located on Sliding Hill road in Ashland.
“It’s quite the attraction,” freshman Angie Huckstep said. “If you wonder where half of Hanover is, they’re at Sonic.”
The car hop has brought back a 50’s style with the cars and poodle skirts of Grease, and has truly broken away from the usual fast food joint.
“I guess it’s like fast food but not really. It’s got a different atmosphere,” senior Taylor Carson said. “That place is always busy, but they’re always fast.”
Carson would know. He’s basically a regular at Sonic. On Feb. 25, its opening day, he went three times. Now he’s been more then 10 times since then.
Generally he stops to get a slush, taking full advantage of their famed “Happy Hour,” in which drinks are half off from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. However his Sonic Burger craze wasn’t started on the day of its opening only intensified.
“I’ve always gone to Sonic. It’s always been a place to hang out,” Carson said.
Just like Carson, senior Laura Pace agreed that the Sonic Burger is amazing and unlike any other restaurant.
“At Sonic, you press a button and they wheel it out to you.” Pace said, “Usually, you have to wait for a person to yell at you over the drive-thru, then they skate it over to you. It’s great!”
Pace’s love for Sonic goes all the way back to her childhood when she would hang out with her friends there.
“I used to live in Tennessee and they had them a lot. But, when I moved Virginia in the ninth grade, they had none,” Pace said.
Now with the new Sonic Burger, she goes as often as possible.
