When you play a sport your entire life and you are raised to play it, you become bred for excellence. For junior golfer Trey Cully, this is the case.

“It’s a hobby of mine. I’ve been playing golf since I was really little so it’s just the sport I play. My grandpa started taking me when I was young,” Cully said. For Cully, golf is his sport.

“I won player of the year for our district, which was a pretty cool thing to do.” As Player of the Year, Cully is considered to be a team leader. He led by example and as a whole, the team only lost one match.

“We won the overall season and we ended up winning the district. During regional’s we didn’t do to well, but overall the season was very good. We only lost one match to Deep Run and that was because we were missing one of our guys,” Cully said. “Other than that we did great.”

“My personal best in a match this season was a 34 at Hanover Country Club.” That was just on the front nine holes of the golf course. Cully’s score on the course is also matched by his distance with the driver. “My farthest drive is somewhere around 300 yards.”

Of course that’s not as far as his favorite golfer Tiger Woods, but maybe one day Cully will be up to par with him.

“He’s just an amazing athlete. He refuses to lose. He doesn’t accept losing. He works really hard to keep it that way,” said Cully. He hopes that his hard work will lead to a future after high school of playing in the next level.

“I want to play golf in college. I’m actually looking at a couple of colleges right now and I’m starting to send e-mails to them,” he said.

Since Cully is a junior this year, next year he will return as a member of the golf team once again, possibly a contender for the player of the year. As for the rest of the team, they have potential to claim the district title again.
