At-a-glance

Like their counterparts, the boys lacrosse team actually did not start out as an official varsity sport at the beginning of the high school back in 2003. - AUSTIN MICHEALS

Listen up girls, the school is getting a new club next year; No, it is not the Canal Club, but it is a girls’ lacrosse club.

The new club will be brought on to the school next year; many people hope that this may bring new girls to try out the sport that has been growing rapidly for the past five years.

"It is very important that the school is getting a team, but not as important as it is to the sport of lacrosse because the sport is growing," junior Laura Sills said.

Not many can deny that the sport has grown; more men have switched from other sports to lacrosse when the boys team came, and once the new club begins it will be interesting to see what the impact is on the other female sports teams currently offered at the school.

The club members are hoping to gather a good number of members to become interested in the sport.

Starting next year lacrosse will go through the four-year process of becoming a varsity sport, most recently the boys’ lacrosse team was added to the school as an official varsity team last year. They did well and Hanover can only wish the girls’ team the same luck at least the boys’ team has had.

"It is the last year for the Hurricanes club team, so it couldn’t be better timing for us to get an official club at Hanover," Sills said.

Lee Davis is also getting a new club to add to the mix next year.

"We currently have people from Atlee and Lee Davis on our team, but next year Lee Davis is also getting a new club. There will be more teams to play next year, that means more competition for us," Sills said.

The club is also intrigued by the amount of followers they hope to gain from the middle school. The club also signals another female club to come to the school after field hockey. Field hockey has also just become the latest girls’ club to become varsity sport for Hanover.

Girls lacrosse has a many more rules than their male counterpart team but they are as competitive as the boys. The girls play tough, even if they do not wear helmets or shoulder pads. Those two pieces of equipment, while offering protection, make the boys bulky and less agile. The sport is very different from the boys version because it will be fluent and clean.

Nobody at the school will be here to see it become an official varsity sport, but the girls are happy they will be in the founding stages of it.
