Senior Mary Williams and junior Lauren Wheeler hug during a scene at an after school rehearsal. This scene involves Wheeler’s character debating on cutting her hair to look better.
From Broadway, to the silver screen, the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” now comes to Washburn Rural.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is the story of a woman named Millie Dillmount, played by senior Mary Williams, who is determined to marry her wealthy boss Trevor Graydon, played by senior Josh Barnes.

“I like that Trevor Graydon is a very manly businessman,” Barnes said. “He is truly a man’s man.”

Millie is from Salina, Kan. who travels to New York and checks into a hotel disguised as a Flapper. She gets a job as a stenographer at the Sincere Trust Company, but finds herself falling for a man named Jimmy Smith. During all of this, she discovers that the hotel owner is the leader of the white slave ring in China.

The original production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” won six Tony Awards, including “Best Musical.”

Due to the success of the musical on Broadway, it was created into a movie in 1976. Julie Andrews played the coveted role of Millie.

The school cast has been rehearsing every day after school.

“Lots of hard work is being put into it. You have to see Joe Schoonover and Dylan Hart speak in Cantonese,” Barnes said.

Although some of the cast is new, many students have been in past plays and musicals and have returned for the experience.

“I wanted to do [Thoroughly Modern Millie] because acting, singing and dancing are my favorite things to do. That and being in ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,’ I’m just back for more fun and exciting theatre experiences,” Williams said.

Senior Gabby Ventucci, who plays Alice, is also excited for the turn out of the play.

“With it being my last year, I really love the experience of spending one last fun time with a group of my friends,” Ventucci said.

Dates for the musical are Nov. 20, 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 each and can be purchased at either the WRHS Bank, the door or by calling the WRHS Box Office at 339-4945.
