Senior Jordan Crawford advances the ball up the field, during practice on Oct. 27. The boys soccer team played in the Regional shortly after. Results were not available at press time.
The soccer team traveled to Junction City on Oct. 2 where they dominated the field.

Scoring eight goals before half time, the team continued to even score two more goals in the second half. Junction City was not able to score once.

Senior Pritchard Mhere scored two of the 10 goals as well as junior Jeffery Veatch. Seniors Jordan Crawford, Andrew Montgomery, Gage Palmer, junior Grant Copeland, sophomore Keven Thomas and freshman Anthony Schmiedeler each scored one goal.

As WaRu faced Emporia on Oct. 7, they had more of a struggle getting the ball past the players and goalie. The team scored its one and only goal, made by Crawford, during the second half. The final score was 1-0.

On Oct. 9 the boys came back as they controlled the field against Highland Park. WaRu lead the score at half time with two goals. The team continued in the second half, scoring eight more goals. The final score mimicked the Junction City game with 10-0. Palmer scored three goals, followed by sophomore Ethan Speake with two goals. Seniors Austin Schile, Mhere and juniors Jacob Lewien, Nick Golden and Veatch scored the remaining five goals.

Traveling to St. Thomas Aquinas on Oct. 14, the boys were victorious again with a 2-0 win. Again, St. Thomas Aquinas struggled to get past goalie Justin Ives. However, WaRu kept up their game and scored in both halves by both Palmer and Copeland.

The game against Seaman on Oct. 16 proved to be a challenging one as it went into overtime. Schile and Veatch scored two goals in the beginning of the game, giving WaRu and 2-0 lead in the first half.

Seaman came back in the second half and scored their first goal of the game. Right before the game was about to end, the opposing team’s player managed to drive a ball into WaRu’s goal and forcing the game into overtime.

The first overtime came and went with no one scoring. But in the second overtime, Crawford scored the winning goal. The final score was 3-2.

“We had played so well in the first half, then we were pretty surprised and stunned when they tied the game up,” head coach Brian Hensyel said.  “It actually was a great test for us heading into the playoffs because we had to deal with adversity.  I knew the guys would crank up the intensity and find a way to win and they did.”

The boys continued to prove that their one Centennial League loss would not stop them. The team faced Topeka High on Oct. 21 where they came away with a 3-0 victory. Copeland scored two of those goals while senior Ryan Haverkamp scored the third.

The team faced Topeka West on Oct 23 on Senior Night. They continued their domination as they won 5-0.

WaRu now prepares for Regionals.

“We are taking the playoffs one game at a time and focusing on the opponent at hand,” Hensyel said. “We continue to emphasize the things we need to do to be successful at every practice.  And we spend time scouting our opponents and getting prepared for them.”

The team’s first round was on Oct. 27. Further results were not available at press time.
