The definition of a council is a body of persons specially designated or selected to act in an advisory, administrative or legislative capacity. Add student to the word and you have a body of students to guide and lead the school.
As I look at this definition and then think about the high school’s Student Council, I think for the most part this definition is correct. If you add the sentence hypocrites who complain about the rest of the school disrespecting their position, while in the same breath disrespect other clubs.
To get respect is to give respect, is a famous saying that is taught to us while growing up, but obviously for some of us it did not quite take hold. On Oct. 10 the third issue of The Blue Streak was published.
After two weeks of hard work, the staff was pretty pleased with the results. Of course, there were a few minor errors, but overall it looked good. Newspaper is a class, only the test, unlike other classes is having your work published for the whole school. As most students experience it is difficult to get a 100 percent. Mistakes happen just like they happen on a math test.
However, some students find it necessary to tear the paper apart and say what I consider some of the rudest comments I have ever experienced. Now before you go thinking to yourself, well the paper deserves it, just put yourself in our shoes.
You take a test and bomb it, only instead of going to retake it your teacher decides to go over every question you missed with you and gives you sarcastic remarks in front of the whole class. Humiliating right?
Now go back to the topic of the student council, I promise this all ties in. Student Council is to promote school spirit, get students involved in activities and a variety of other jobs.
As a past member of Student Council, I had great respect for those who are members, until Oct. 10.
Student Council has always had to fight the topic of what their actual purpose is and always gets the attitude from students that they do not do their job well enough.
In return members get upset. So to me it makes no sense why they would turn around and say the same thing about the newspaper staff. You might be wondering who I mean by “they” right?
In particular I am thinking of the executive members, the ones who are suppose to set the tone of the school and run Student Council. I find it very hypocritical for the leaders of the club, who are supposed to represent our school, to be talking negatively and inconsiderately about fellow students.
If the executive branch does not even take pride in this school and the students who go here, then no wonder the majority of the school does the same to them.
If you want respect you have to give it. As for now my respect for Student Council is gone and I no longer have any desire to defend it the next time I overhear someone saying how the club is pointless and does nothing.
