Baruch College Campus High School does not have a nurse due to the recent budget cuts and the rarity of dire medical emergencies. $0$0According to principal Alicia Perez-Katz, after the budget cuts, most of the money in the school budget is being used to pay for the teachers. Perez-Katz expressed that a school nurse is not desperately needed because serious medical incidents in school are uncommon. The school is not required to employ a nurse but must have plans for responding to medical situations. $0$0For a minor injury, such as a broken bone, a student can obtain bandages from Parent Coordinator Janice Salmeri or use the medical supplies in the first aid kits in the classrooms. Salmeri, however, is not the school nurse.$0$0In the event of a serious injury, the school will dial 911 to request emergency services and send the injured student to the hospital. There are automated external defibrillators throughout the building.$0$0The school also quarantines anyone showing the symptoms of the H1N1 influenza. If a student were to exhibit symptoms of the influenza while school is in session, he is obligated to report to the office and notify his parents. The student must then wait in the lobby until his parents arrive to escort him home, where he must remain until he recovers from his fever.$0$0Students feel uneasy about the absence of a school nurse despite the plans.$0$0"There is no one to really turn to," said Aris Longmore, a junior and a member of the BCCHS wrestling team. As a student athlete, Longmore is concerned because students may have to wait to receive medical care in hospitals. $0$0Freshman Peony Cheng believes the acquirement of a school nurse should be a priority in the school. Cheng, surprised by the news, is worried about her own safety.$0$0“If someone gets injured they would want to go to the nurse,” said Cheng.$0$0In the previous years, students had access to the school nurse in the School of the Future, a high school neighboring the building BCCHS used to occupy. $0
