At-a-glance

Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, NFL’s 2012 MVP, is now said to star as a future Saturday Night Live host? Apparently, it’s in the works.

Rodgers, who starred in the hit “Discount Double Check” commercials for State Farm with teammates Clay Matthews and BJ Raji, has expressed interest in hosting the late night show.

Rodgers first expressed interests after talking to SNL cast members in Indianapolis during the Super Bowl while appearing during the pregame show. When asked about his desire to host during his weekly radio show on ESPN 540, he responded: “I’m hopefully that we can figure something out there.”

However, don’t count on Rodgers being on TV much more once he’s done with football. When asked about his future in broadcasting at a radio station interview, he admitted: “As much fun as it was to be in that setting ... I really would like to use my talents for other things when I’m done playing.”

If he does end up hosting, Rodgers won’t be the first player to parlay from the football field to TV. Other athletes have tried their (throwing) hands at commercials – flashback to Brett Farve’s attempt at selling Wrangler Jeans (which, ironically, was spoofed on SNL). Other MVP quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Joe Montana have also dipped their cleats in the waters of SNL.

As for Rodgers, a spot on SNL could be used a stepping stone to stardom outside the realm of athletics, as it was for other celeb-letes. Whether or not the quarterback will actually host remains to be seen, but if he does, Wisconsinites will have a new claim to fame – a quarterback that can play and act.
