Two changes next year will reduce the number of parking places available for the Broughton campus.
One involves installation of 12 modular units or “pods” to increase classroom space on the school campus.
In addition, ownership of what is commonly known as “the strip” is under discussion.
Speed bumps along the strip have disappeared, removed by the city of Raleigh in preparation for paving.
What is commonly called “the strip” is really named Cameron Street. The ownership of Cameron Street has been a disputed area for many years.
While the dispute is far from over, there is still the possibility that the City of Raleigh may have ownership of Cameron Street.
With this in mind, there is a possibility that there could be a change in its use.
There is speculation that Cameron Street may be turned into free parking or used to widen the intersecting street.
If this was the case, it could mean changes for the students who park along the strip or those who plan to park there next year.
“I think that if Cameron Street was in fact the property of the city, there would be a lot less parking for juniors and seniors,” senior Courtney Cason said.
What is known is that parking will be cut down considerably with the addition of modular classrooms in back.
Current trailers will become an extension of the front parking lot. Five rows of the back parking lot will be replaced with 12 modular units. Therefore, about 50 parking spaces will be taken out.
“These renovations will take place over this summer, so hopefully by the time school starts next year we will have the problem of less parking will be taken care of,” assistant principal Michael Lentz said.
