There’s nothing better than Broughton men’s tennis, unless you are Roger Federer.

The Caps welcome new Coach Bill White this year. He has been the Head Coach of the BHS JV Basketball team for three years. This year he led the JV men to an undefeated season, it will be interesting to see how this season turns out.

"I am a little nervous about coming in as coach due to the great tradition at Broughton, but also excited to be able to coach such a talented group of players," White said.

The team will be led by seniors James Coxe and Phillip Cardella. Coxe will play number one, he recently committed to UNC- Chapel Hill.

"We’re going to have a strong team this year and have a good shot at winning states. I’d be disappointed with anything less," Coxe said.

Other top players include Juniors Staats Battle and Steed Johnson, and Freshmen Carlton Bunn and Andrew Waddell.

"We have a great coach and a hard working group of guys who are determined to win big at the state tournament," junior Staats Battle said.

The team dominated in their first match against Leesville. They won all six singles matches and one doubles match.

"Broughton tennis is widely known as a force to be reckoned with, and this year is no different," junior Steed Johnson said.

On March 8th the men went to the Port City Tournament in Wilmington, NC and won. They beat New Hanover High School in the finals by a score of 8-1.

"The win in Wilmington was a big confidence booster for our team, it definitely shows that we have what it takes to be the best," Coxe said.

The team’s goal is to win the state championship title. Other tough contenders will be Millbrook and RJ Reynolds in Winston-Salem.

The question is, do they have what it takes? Be sure to come and support the team.
